| Sumayyah bint Khabaat
She was the slave of Abu Huthaifah and wife of Yasir. Being the generous person he was, Abu Huthaifah freed gave Sumayyah and her husband their freedom and even afterwards helped them whenever they were in need.
Sumayyah was among the first seven people to accept Islaam. She and her husband and son suffered all the hardships the early Muslims were subjected to. On one occasion the Prophet saw the family suffer the worst forms of torture possible, but there was no way he could save them. To console them he said: “Be patient, oh family of Yasir, for your final destination is paradise.” On occasion Yasir managed to escape and went to the Prophet to ask when all the suffering would end. The Prophet comforted him with a prayer asking Allaah to protect and save the family of Yasir from the fire of Hell.
Abu Jahl subjected Sumayyah to the worst possible torture and when he realized that she would never forsake her new faith, he killed her with his spear. Thus Sumayyah had the distinction and honour to be the first female martyr in Islaam. | |
