| Jawaahirah bint Harith RA
She was the daughter of the chief of Banu Mustalaq, a clan of the tribe of Banu Khuza ‘ah. She was born into luxury and had all the refinements and graces of a princess. Her name at the time was Barah.
In the 5th year of the Hijrah the Banu Mustalaq planned an attack on the Muslims. The Prophet came to hear of this plan and prepared his troops for battle. He sent a message to the Banu Mustalaq to accept Islaam and they would be left in peace. They preferred to declare war, but was no match for the Muslim army. Ten of their men were killed and about seven hundred people captured. Among them was Jawaahirah bint Harith who was given to Thabit bin Qais al Ansari. At the first opportunity she appealed to the Prophet for special consideration, as she was the daughter of the chief of a tribe and not used to life as a slave. She said her ransom was gold, but she had none to buy her freedom. The Prophet asked her if she would like to live as a free woman and be part of his household if he paid her ransom. She accepted the offer, was freed, accepted Islaam and married the Prophet with her freedom as her dowry. She was twenty years old at the time. The Prophet changed her name to Jawaahirah. She later said that three days before the battle between her tribe and the Muslims, she saw the moon coming towards her from the direction of Madinah.
When the Mujaahidoon heard about her conversion and marriage to the Prophet, they freed all the slaves of the Banu Mustalaq. Thus Jawaahirah was the cause of her people accepting Islaam.
When Aishah saw her, she said that she was beautiful as a fairy. On another occasion she said that she had yet to see a lady who proved to be a source of such blessings for her people, because through her one hundred families of her tribe regained their freedom.
Jawaahirah was very devoted to prayers. On one occasion the Prophet left her house while she was engrossed in prayers. Her returned in the afternoon to still find her busy with prayers, and taught her 4 sentences that equaled her long prayers in reward. These were: “How perfect Allaah is, and I praise Him by the number of His creation, and His pleasure, and by the weight of His throne, and the extent of his words.”
She died in the fiftieth year of the Hijrah at the age of sixty five during the reign of Muaawiya bin Abi Sufyan. The governor of Madinah, Marwaan bin Hakam led the funeral prayers and she was buried in Jannatul Baaqi. | |
