| Fatimah bint Muhammad
She was the youngest daughter of Prophet Muhammed, having been born about two years before he attained prophethood. Contrary to Arab custom, she was not given away to be breastfed by ladies living on the outskirts of Makkah. Her mother, Khadeejah, chose to nurse her herself.
She could barely walk when her father declared his prophethood, but became part of the small but dedicated Muslim community who suffered at the hands of the unbelievers. She was about ten years old when the unbelievers declared a boycott against the Muslims, which entailed that no trade was to be conducted with them, nobody should marry them and no co-operation be afforded them. The Muslims were driven from their homes and for three years roamed the outskirts of Makkah, struggling to stave off starvation. All this had a very negative effect on Fatima’s health, and she never recovered from it.
Soon after the boycott ended, Khadijah passed away, an event which further traumatized the young Fatimah, but she had the firm support of her father and three sisters. When the prophet returned from his mission to Taif, Fatima saw his condition, having been stoned till the blood filled his boots.
In spite of all this Fatima was very courageous, even as a young child. She was often around when the non-believers abused her father, and she would always do her best to protect him. She would bravely stand between her father and those who attempted to harm him.
Once Abu Jahl slapped her in her face for no reason at all. She complained to Abu Sufyaan who was the leader of the Quraish. Abu Sufyaan accompanied her to where Abu Jahl was and told her to slap him in exactly the same way as he slapped her. She did this without hesitation. When she told her father about this he was very pleased at Abu Sufyaan’s sense of justice and prayed to Allaah that he should accept Islaam. His prayer was answered when Abu Sufyaan accepted Islaam with the conquest of Makkah.
In the second year of the Hijrah, when Fatimah was eighteen years old, she married Ali, the cousin of her father. Ali was so poor that he had to sell his shield to raise money for the dowry. Her entire married life was one of poverty and hardship, but she had all the patience, and the love of her father to keep her going. The hardship of the years of the boycott had severely weakened her body, but she never complained, even though her daily chores were to grind wheat, which left callouses on her hands, and fetch water, which left scars on her breasts. Once Ali suggested to her that she ask her father for a slave to help her. Instead her father taught her something that would benefit her more. He told her to recite after every compulsory prayer 33 times subhaanallaah, 33 times alhamdulillaah and 33 times allaahu akbar, and she was content with this.
Aishah said that she never saw anyone more devoted to the truth than Fatimah, that she stood shoulder to shoulder with the other emigrants and helpers, tending to the wounded and dying in the Battle of Uhud. When the prophet was injured, she helped to stop the bleeding, and bandaged his wounds. She said that Fatimah not only looked her father, but also spoke, sat, stood and walked like him. It is reported in Shaheeh Bukhari that the Prophet said that the person whom he loved most was Fatima.
Fatimah gave birth to three sons, Hasan, Husayn and Mohsin, and two daughters, Zainab and Umm Kulthoom.
Abdullaah ibn Abbas reported that when Suratun Nasr was revealed, the Prophet sent for Fatimah and told her that Allaah had indicated to him that his life on earth was to end soon. This got her crying, but when he informed her that she would be the first to meet up with him in the hereafter, she smiled. It is reported that after the death of the Prophet, no one ever saw Fatimah smile again.
Fatimah joined her deceased father six months after his death and she was buried in Jannatul Baqi.
It is reported from the Prophet that he said: “One day and angel came and told me the glad tiding that Fatimah would be the leader of women in paradise.” | |
