| Umm Haraam bin Malhaan
She was the paternal aunt of Anas bin Maalik, and her two brothers Haraam and Saleem fought in the battles of Badr and Uhud. She was married to ‘Amr bin Qais and after his death she married “Ubaadah bin Saamit.
She was the first of the women of Madinah to accept Islaam.She also preached Islaam even before the hijrah. She had a burning desire to be martyred in the cause of Islaam. During the khilaafah on Uthmaan, the first Islamic navy was established to conquer the island of Cyprus. Umm Haraam accompanied her husband on this expedition. The general of the navy, Muaawiyah was also accompanied by his wife, Fakhtah bint Qurdhah. Umm Haraam related that she had heard the Prophet saying that some of his people would journey by sea for the purpose of jihad. She asked him if she would be one of them and he confirmed. The expedition was a great success, but on the way back, her mule was frightened by something and threw her off his back. She sustained a serious neck injury which led to her death. She thus realized her dream of becoming a martyr in the cause of Islaam. | |
