Aishah bint Abi Bakr (RA)

Aisha was born on 614 AD to Abu Bakr, who was to become the first khaleefah (ruler) of the Muslims after the demise of the Prophet, and Umm Roomaan.

She was an extremely bright child. Once the Prophet saw her playing with a winged horse. He asked her what it was and she said it was a winged horse. The prophet told her that horses do not have wings and she promptly reminded him that prophet Sulaymaan (Solomon) had winged horses. This demonstrates not only her quickness of wit, but also her knowledge and retentive memory. She was only 5 years old at the time.

The Prophet once dreamed that Jibreel brought him a picture of Aishah wrapped in a green cloth of silk and told him that she would be his wife in this world and in the hereafter.
The prophet married Aishah when she was 9 years old but she remained with her family. After the Prophet had settled in at Madinah after the hijrah, he sent for his family. Aishah was twelve years old at the time. She was housed in a very modest one roomed apartment next to the mosque of the Prophet with only the barest of essentials. The Prophet allowed her to play with her dolls and girls of her own age. He used to play with her and liked to race her until she fell down out of breath. But even at this tender age she displayed exceptional maturity, was very sensitive to the needs of her husband and learned all that she could from him.

In spite of living a life of hardship and poverty Aishah soon became well known for her generosity. She herself reports that sometimes for a few days no fire would be lit in her house, meaning that no food was cooked. Yet whenever she received money she would immediately go out to distribute it among the poor. It is reported that she once distributed to the poor 70,000 dirham in one sitting. On two other occasions she received 100,000 and distributed it to the poor even before nightfall. On one occasion she was fasting but forgot to keep something for herself to break her fast with. On another occasion, while she was fasting, a beggar came asking for food. She told her maid to give the beggar the last piece of bread they had in the house. The maid hesitated, reminding her that she was fasting and would need it the evening for iftar. Aishah became very annoyed and told the maid curtly that she should help the hungry woman and that the evening would take care of itself. By iftar time someone had sent her a dish of cooked meat and she told the maid that Allaah had provided her with something better than she had given in charity. It is also reported that she owned a house which she sold to Muawaiyah and gave all the money she got for it in charity.

Because of her closeness to the Prophet, Aisha had firsthand knowledge of all the teachings of the deen. Of the most senior companions would consult her in matters of deen and she was an expert in the knowledge of inheritance. 2,210 authentic ahaadeeth (oral traditions of the Prophet) were attributed to and accepted from her, second only to Abu Hureirah who narrated 2,630. Imam Thahbi writes that Aishah was superior to all other women in her knowledge and wisdom. After the demise of the Prophet Aisha became the first reference in matters of deen.

Aisha was the cause of the revelation of a number of Quraan aayaat. Once the munaafiqoon (hypocrites) spread false rumours about her being in unfaithful to her husband. Allaah cleared her name forever by answering the accusations through a revelation to the Prophet. On one occasion she was travelling with the Prophet and some companions when she held up their departure from their camp, looking for a lost necklace. The companions, including her father, blamed her for being the cause of them being caught without water for wudoo when the waqt of Fajr set in. It was then that Allaah revealed the aayah permitting those on travel to perform tayammum (ablution with dust) when no water is to be found. Immediately the companions who earlier blamed her, started praising her and thanking her for the blessing which Allaah bestowed on them (and all Muslims till qiyaamah) on account of her. Abu Bakr said that up until then he never realized how pleased Allaah was with his daughter.

Aishah had the good fortune of seeing Jibreel on two occasions. Once she saw the Prophet speaking to a strange horse rider and asked him who the man was. The Prophet was surprised that she actually saw the stranger and told it was Jibreel in human form, and that he requested the Prophet to convey his greetings to her. On another occasion, while the Prophet was praying at her house, she saw a stranger outside the door. When he had finished praying she told about the stranger. He went outside and saw that it was Jibreel.

Even though she was only in her early teens, Aishah participated in many of the battles of Islaam, tending to the wounded, providing water and food to the mujaahideen, and even picking up the spent arrows for re-use.

When the Prophet fell ill and Aisha was also not feeling well, he told that should she die before him, he would perform the burial himself. She replied that in that case he should bring a new wife into her apartment. The prophet never recovered from this illness and died while resting his head in the lap of the wife whom he said he loved the most. Before his death, Aisha had a dream that three moons descended into her apartment. When the Prophet passed away he was buried in her apartment. Then her father told her that part of her dream had come true. When her father died he was buried next to the Prophet and when Umar died, he was buried next to her father in the grave which Aisha had reserved for herself, but gave to Umar on his request.

Aisha died in the 58th year of the Hijrah on 17th Ramdaan at the age of 66.

She used to proudly announce that she had been granted 9 blessings from Allaah which distinguished from all the other women in the world except Maryam (Mary), the mother of Nabee Eesaa (Jesus).

1 Jibreel had presented the Prophet with a picture of her and informed him that she would be his wife in this world and in the hereafter.

2 She was the only one of the prophet’s wives who had not been married before.

3 The Prophet passed away while resting in her lap and was buried in her apartment

4 Many angels encircled her apartment with love and respect.

5 Very often the Prophet would receive revelation while they were together.

6 She was the daughter of the closest and dearest friend of the Prophet, Abu Bakr as Siddique ( Truthful).

7 When she was accused of unfaithfulness, she was cleared by Allaah himself.

8 She was a born Muslim and had been raised in a pure environment,
and spent her formative years with the purest of all creation, the Prophet of Allaah.

9 Allaah had promised her forgiveness and abundance.
